Columba of Rieti ate nothing save the Blessed Sacrament
Was it Leonardo da Vinci who said
(You know I went to a wedding in that town once. It was a beautiful service, in English and Italian. The heat in the church was oppressive, everyone had been given a white fan, and the fluttering, the gentle waves at the level of the pews, animated an ocean in front of the couple. That magnificent expanse, visualized in white, that they were about to explore, helped me to see how, at that time, I was far from that sort of adventure.)
“Don’t let your body be a tomb for dead animals” or something along those lines?
The point is, though, that what you chew and swallow,
what you willing decide to let
your body break down,
becomes you.
And in that process, you also, through your own invisible powers, transform that very substance into something new
(more invisible powers for yourself!).
So I guess when
the Blessed Columba of Rieti
(Lucrezia Borgia accused her of practicing magic, did you know?)
ate nothing save the Blessed Sacrament
she was really just desiring to transform God,
and require that he
work for her.
Perhaps Lucrezia was not wrong, after all.
