what is left archival inkjet print 16” x 24” Ålvik, Norway, 2016 This image is documentation from a project entitled Vestige . The piece was performative in nature; using thin plaster molds of my body, I envisioned these objects to be like second skins or envelopes of myself, or “vestiges”.  Each part of the body was specifically chosen for the personal and cultural meanings associated with it, and the mold was then further adorned through writings and decoration within.  I then buried these “vestiges” at the foot of a mountain.  After six weeks I disinterred the objects to see and photographically document how the landscape literally transformed them.  The project was ultimately a gesture, a way to bury former ways of being at the feet of the eternal.  It was a poetic visualization of how planting a garden for pain might transform it.

we sew/see the sky (Vati)

2017

Video piece about attempting to bridge the gap between Ada, Ohio, and Florence, Italy. An Italian sky (or a sky in the sense of an homage to many frescoed ceilings in churches throughout Florence and the rest of the world) was created through the light of the Ohio sky using the cyanotype process. I then embroidered the outlines of the eight pointed stars using over 500 feet of gold thread, a meditative gesture meant to reflect my reverence for both Florence and Ohio. I then slept under the blanket, a way to sleep, and dream, in both places simultaneously.

the mountain of gardens you gave me/they were not what they seemed

performance/video
Ålvik, Norway, 2016
dimensions variable

I woke up one morning and decided to pick a mountain of roses, which I then proceeded to eat.

The reading is "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" by John Keats
and a section of a poem I wrote from which the title of this piece comes.
