Shortly after returning to Ohio from my first pilgrimage to Florence in 2009, I cut off my long hair. The shorn hair had been kept, but ultimately misplaced, in my parents’ house until I discovered it again in the summer of 2016. The object became a source of fascination for me, a way to reach out and literally touch a part of myself that I thought I had been lost.
